The human mind is an amazing organ. It can dream up and make reality all kinds of ideas and inventions and technological advances. The question is, should we make all of these come true?
Atom bomb, anyone?
I read an article about the new Google Glass and at no time did I think they were a good idea.
They are glasses with a little cube on the top right. When you wear them, a voice activated screen is displayed in your field of vision, like picture in picture on your tv.
Here are just a few issues I see with this technology.
1. Don’t we already have a problem with eye contact in this age of the smart phone? People are glued to their phones while they’re walking, driving, and having dinner. In fact, we’re well on our way to becoming the people in WALL-E who are so plugged in, they are 100% unaware of their surroundings.
Imagine these glasses on everyone. They won’t be just looking at a screen in front of their eyes, they will be looking right through you. Creepy.
2. You know people will wear these when they are driving. It will happen. We really don’t need one more thing distracting us from driving, right? We’ve got drunk driving, cell phone calls, texting, screaming kids, talking GPS, and the statue of liberty waving at you around tax time. We need a little less distraction, not more.
3. I am already addicted to the internet and facebook and twitter and my iphone and Candy Crush (a game I despise) – I don’t need another avenue to plug into the Matrix, Morpheus, I’ve got plenty – thanks.
4. It will be much easier to do this.
The only good potential I see coming out of this technology is if they used Glass to create Geordi glasses for blind people.
What do you think of Google Glass? Yay or Nay? When using Google Glass are you more likely to run into a bear, into the pool, or off a cliff?
