Nightmare on Elm Street came out in 1984. Epic movie. The film kept me awake many many nights, but it was the first time I saw him. Johnny Depp.
Boy, I was really hoping he wouldn’t die.
Glen. Glen. GLEN!!!!
Little did I know that 6 years later, I would spend a week with him. Wow, life turns around, doesn’t it?
It was the summer of 1990 and I was in my hometown in Maryland when Johnny walked into my life. A bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. I admired him for quite a while from afar, but now, at last, we would meet.
There were rumors around town that he would be here, but I had to see for myself. I got dressed in my favorite jeans, put on my makeup, did up my hair, ran out the door and jumped into my Honda CRX for the short drive to where he was waiting.
When I arrived there were few places to park, so I pulled in behind the old church across from my middle school and parked my car. As soon as I shut off the engine, I flew open my car door and bounded through the church parking lot for the street. There I stopped, adjusted my jeans, fluffed my hair, smacked my lips and fixed my shirt.
I put one foot in the street when I looked up and there he was.
Him in his leather jacket.
Me in my designer jeans.
Him with a DA combed into his full black hair.
Me with my long blond locks and tall bangs.
It was meant to be.
Trying to act as cool as possible, I stepped back onto the curb and waited for him to come across the street. He was talking to the group surrounding him.
Look up ~ look up ~ look up! I thought.. Here I am! Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore ~ “Johnny! Johnny!” I said. “Johnny!! Johnny!!!” I said again.
Clearly being cool was out of my grasp at that point.
He continued across the street, talking with his entourage because obviously he didn’t hear me. THAT, or I just made an ass outta myself. No matter ~ this girl was determined. I noticed that he was walking to where my car was parked, so I figured he wanted to meet me there. Excited, I skipped back to the church. As I rounded the bend, I saw it. His trailer. How did I not notice it before? But there it was ~ parked not 50 feet from my little CRX.
As Johnny mounted the steps into his trailer, I gave it one last shot. “Johnny!” I said, in my clearest and loudest voice. This time he spun around, sat down in his big brown chair and gave me a wave and a sideways smile.
Ahhh… A fan for life.
Every day for the next week, I was there watching him film the movie Cry Baby. Quite possibly one of the worst movies ever made, but I’ll always look upon it fondly as the week Johnny and I spent together.
See the building right behind Johnny in the picture below? That was the church and the street where it all happened.
He went on to star in many a movie, not to mention television. Here are a couple of my favorites performances.
Edward Scissorhands, also in 1990
His greatest role ~ Pirates of the Caribbean: 2003-Present
‘Oh Johnny, we’ll always have
To which I’m sure he would reply: “Love, you will always remember that as the day you almost caught
Captain Jack Sparrow Johnny Depp.”
Tell me ~ have you met any movie stars? Did you act as cool as I did? What is your favorite Johnny Depp movie?
