In 1990, Total Recall came out starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. You remember that movie, right? Arnold goes to a Rekall center for an implanted vacation/adventure, only to discover that he is actually a secret agent who was back from a mission on Mars.
In the beginning of the movie, Arnold (I call him Arnold, ’cause we are THAT close) is on a subway filled with television monitors. On the tvs were various drug ads and this commercial.
The commercial prompted him to visit Rekall to go on a implanted adventure and that’s when his real journey begins.
Great movie ~ thoroughly enjoyed it.
Fast forward in real life to around 1997. I’m watching tv when a commercial comes on. For prescription drugs. At first, I thought it was one of those Saturday Night Live fake commercials ~ I’m waiting for the punchline. I’m waiting…until it went on and on and on to end with a list of at least 10 different nefarious side effects.
That’s when it hit me that our society had stepped into the realm of the recall.
Since then we’ve been on a very defined road and it’s been paved with
- drug commercials
- prescriptions that solve each and every little issue
- virtual video games
- video games that ‘see’ you
- virtual Internet tours
- televisions that ‘see’ you
Do you remember the scene in Total Recall when Sharon Stone was getting a tennis lesson from a hologram? I remember thinking how cool it was and how we would never have anything like that. Well, ladies and gentlemen, we’re here ~ aren’t we?
There are many places in the world right now that are not safe to travel to ~ like the Egyptian Pyramids ~ how far off do you think implanted vacations are in order to ‘visit’ such places? We can already virtually visit them on the Internet and get a tour. I’m sure that implanted memories of imaginary vacations are on the horizon.
If our past is located only in our memories, what difference does it really make if we are physically there or not? All that is required is that we believe that we were there and we have the memories to back it up.
Want to travel to far distant lands? Land on a star? Fight in a war? Fly? Save the planet from sure destruction?
Rekall. Rekall. Rekaaaaaaaalllll…
What do you think of implanted vacations? Do you think it’s a possibility? Does it scare you or excite you?
